Eric Chelle in his latest pre-match press conference has opened up on why Stanley Nwabali could miss the Nigeria vs Uganda AFCON 2025 fixture.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is battling “small” knee and ankle pains following Nigeria’s recent victory over Tunisia.

The update comes as the Super Eagles prepare for their final Group C match against Uganda on Tuesday. Despite the injury concerns, Nigeria has already secured qualification for the Round of 16 after winning their first two matches against Tanzania (2–1) and Tunisia (3–2).

Playing Through the Pain

Nwabali appeared to aggravate a pre-existing condition during the tense 3–2 win over Tunisia on Saturday. Observers noted the Chippa United captain seemed to twist his body awkwardly while attempting to stop Tunisia’s opening goal.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Nwabali admitted the physical toll the tournament is taking on him.

“I was injured, but with the help of team doctors and the physios, I’m able to stand on the pitch and play,” Nwabali said. “It is quite tough for me because it is not something you come out to say… but I am always a strong man, I try to just represent my country.”

Coaching Decision Pending

In a pre-match press conference on Monday, Coach Chelle addressed the fitness of both Nwabali and midfielder Frank Onyeka, who is also dealing with an ankle issue. Chelle remained coy about whether Nwabali would start against the Cranes, hinting at a potential “surprise” in the lineup rotation.

“Nwabali has a small knee pain, and Frank is dealing with an ankle problem,” Chelle stated. “We will take care of the situation for the team. I need to consider the whole team, and we have one last training session today.”

Options for Nigeria

With qualification already in the bag, Chelle may opt to rest his star goalkeeper to ensure he is fully fit for the knockout stages. If Nwabali is sidelined, the Super Eagles have Francis Uzoho and Amas Obasogie available to step in between the posts.

Nigeria enters the final group game at the top of Group C with six points, while their opponents, Uganda, look to secure their own path forward in the competition.
