Speaking in a recent interview with HipTV, Omawumi recalled her first meeting with the producer shortly after her Idols West Africa experience. Cobhams, she said, offered her an opportunity to record a song even though he wasn’t sure what would come out of it.

“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities outside Idol West Africa,” she recounted. “He told me to just go with it, and that project became a major turning point for me.”

From studio session to brand ambassador

Omawumi said the collaboration unexpectedly opened several doors, including her first major endorsement deal that lasted two years.

“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years,” she said.

She also revealed that the exposure from the partnership gave her a platform to perform alongside P-Square at four major concerts across different locations.

Learning from a master producer

The Bottom Belle crooner expressed deep admiration for Cobhams’ creativity, describing him as a mentor whose guidance refined her delivery and stage presence.

“Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she added. “He helped me understand how to express emotion through performance.”

Omawumi’s reflections highlight the producer’s lasting influence on her artistry and serve as a reminder of how collaboration and mentorship continue to shape Nigeria’s vibrant music industry.
