Former Senator Shehu Sani has urged Nigerian startups and taxi unions to take advantage of Uber’s exit from the country by creating a homegrown alternative to the ride-hailing giant.
Sani made the call in a post on X while reacting to Uber’s decision to discontinue its operations in Nigeria after 12 years.
“Uber has left Nigeria.A good opportunity for our local startups to takeover the business.Even our Taxi unions can create an app become our Uber.Its not rocket science,” he wrote.
Uber officially discontinued its operations in Nigeria on September 2, 2026, after reviewing its business priorities and investment focus across Africa. The company’s exit has since triggered discussions about the future of Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry.
Sani’s suggestion has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some supporting the idea of a local alternative while others questioned whether local operators could provide the affordability, safety and reliability associated with established ride-hailing platforms.
