Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has acknowledged that a potential move back to Barcelona would be difficult to refuse, despite insisting he remains settled in London.
The 27-year-old, who came through the Catalan club’s youth system, addressed speculation about a return to Spain while reaffirming his current commitment to Chelsea.
“Spain is always Spain. It is where I grew up and you always think about going back,” Cucurella said.
“But I would [prefer to] leave it for a few years down the line. I am very happy here and it is a great life experience.”
Open stance on Barcelona return
When pressed specifically on Barcelona, Cucurella admitted the emotional and professional pull of the club.
“It is clear if that situation did arise, it is hard to turn down, but I would have to consider it in the end,” he said.
“It is not just me, I also have to think about my family and together we would have to decide what’s best for us.”
The defender made only one senior appearance for Barcelona before building his career through spells at Eibar, Getafe and later Brighton & Hove Albion, which earned him a £60m move to Chelsea in 2022.
Concerns over Chelsea instability
Cucurella also highlighted instability at Chelsea following managerial changes, particularly after the departure of Enzo Maresca.
“The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,” he said. “If you asked me, I would not have made this decision.”
He added: “The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell. We had a caretaker first, then a new manager, with new ideas and no time to work on them. It is what it is.”
Chelsea have struggled for consistency this season, including a heavy aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
“Results like that are always hard to take,” Cucurella said. “To fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more.”
