A viral video of Pastor Marvin Winans confronting a female church member during a fundraising service in Detroit, United States, has stirred widespread debate on Nigerian social media.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred during the church’s “Day of Giving” program, where Pastor Winans encouraged members to contribute what he termed “$1,000 plus 1.”
The situation took a tense turn when a woman and her son approached the altar to donate $1,235 (around ₦1.8 million), explaining:
“I’m giving in faith and standing with the vision of Perfecting Church, sowing this seed of $1,000 plus $235, and trusting God for the blessings ahead.”
However, Pastor Winans quickly interrupted, saying, “That’s only $1,200.” When the woman acknowledged that her donation fell short of the requested amount, he added, “You’re not listening to what I’m saying. If you have $1,000 plus $1,000…”
The woman assured the pastor she would bring the remaining $800 later, but Winans replied, “Well, that isn’t what I asked you to do.”
A clip capturing the exchange has now gone viral, drawing criticism from many online users who described the pastor’s tone as dismissive and insensitive.
Among those who reacted was Nigerian media personality Daddy Freeze, well-known for his outspoken criticism of tithing practices in churches.
“When you don’t have sense, pastor go chop your money tire.”
