Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement in principle with Roberto De Zerbi to become their new head coach, following the departure of Igor Tudor.
The north London club moved quickly after ending Tudor’s short-lived interim spell, which lasted just 44 days.
De Zerbi, who recently left Marseille, has now given his approval to return to the Premier League on a proposed five-year contract.
Club accelerates appointment
Tottenham had initially identified De Zerbi as a long-term target for the summer. However, their current position – just one point above the relegation zone, forced the board to fast-track the process.
Talks are ongoing to finalise details, including the composition of his backroom staff, with the club aiming to complete the appointment within days. The intention is for De Zerbi to assume duties before key players return from international commitments.
The long-term contract underlines Tottenham’s strategy to prioritise stability, with the Italian viewed as a coach capable of implementing a defined footballing philosophy.
High-risk timing amid relegation battle
De Zerbi’s arrival comes at a critical stage of the season, with Tottenham facing a tight relegation fight.
Known for his possession-based style, the 46-year-old has previously required time to implement his system.
During his early period at Brighton, results were initially slow, raising questions about how quickly he can adapt in a high-pressure environment.
Tottenham’s immediate objective remains survival, with seven league matches left to secure their top-flight status. De Zerbi is expected to take charge in time for the upcoming fixture against Sunderland on April 12.
The final stretch of the campaign will serve as a decisive test of both his tactical approach and the squad’s ability to respond under pressure.
