Operators of economic and financial crime have arrested a fake DSS official identified as Boniface Oburuku for stealing a handbag of an international guest from the Republic of Mauritius.

The 32-year-old man stole the bag containing the lady’s two Samsung mobile phones, an international passport, US dollars, Nigerian and Mauritian currencies at an event organised by the EFCC on the occasion of the national day of democracy and anti-corruption summit at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel on 11 June 2019.

Oburuku, who has been on the Commission’s watch list since last year, was arrested in Lagos a few days ago. Before his arrest, the secret service revealed that he was constantly travelling from the Mpape area in the FCT to Jabi and later to Gwagwalada, all in the FCT.

“The Commission became active through intelligence investigations of the suspect throughout the country which showed that he was constantly moving from Mpape’s area in the FCT to Jabi and later to Gwagwalada, all in the FCT. He finally settled in Lagos, where he was arrested.

“The investigation also revealed that Oburuku, in order to breach security at the event of the day, dressed up in a smart black suit, claimed to belong to the Ministry of State Security (DSS) and was given access to the venue by security officers on duty without presenting an invitation.

“While confessing the crime, Oburuku apologized to President Buhari, the EFCC and his Mauritian victim. He called on others involved in fraudulent and criminal activities to turn over a new leaf”.

He would soon be charged in court”.
