Millwall defender Zak Sturge was taken to hospital after suffering a head injury during a match at Portsmouth. The incident occurred when the England Under-18 international was struck directly in the face by a powerful cross from Pompey midfielder Terry Devlin. The ball was hit from just four yards away, delivering a sickening blow that snapped Sturge’s head back and immediately halted play.

Referee Michael Salisbury stopped the match in the 32nd minute as medical staff from both sides rushed onto the pitch. Sturge remained on the ground as physios assessed his condition, and after a four-minute delay he was stretchered off and taken straight to a waiting ambulance. Supporters from both clubs at Fratton Park applauded the young defender as he was carried away.

Portsmouth later sent a message of support on social media, writing: “Sending our best wishes to the Lions’ defender.” Fans across the EFL also reacted with concern online, posting messages such as “Best wishes,” “Hope he’s good,” “Oh no!”, “Hope he’s well,” and “Very unlucky.”

Sturge, who joined Millwall with high expectations following his rise from youth football, had been playing at left-back before the incident. His condition has not yet been officially updated, but Millwall are expected to release further information as soon as hospital assessments are completed.
