According to reports, Augustine Eguavoen has responded to speculation that he will take over as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Augustine Eguavoen has publicly expressed strong disapproval over reports suggesting that he and Ladan Bosso were being considered to take over the Super Eagles coaching job ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director described the reports as false and misleading, emphasising that there has been no discussion or plan for him to replace the current head coach, Eric Chelle. Earlier in the week, ScoreNigeria claimed that Eguavoen and Bosso were being lined up to lead the team if Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a claim that has now been firmly debunked.

Eguavoen, who has previously managed the Super Eagles on multiple occasions, stated that he remains focused on his current role within the NFF’s technical structure and is not seeking a return to the dugout. “It is unfortunate that such unfounded stories keep circulating. I have not been approached for any coaching role, and my attention remains on supporting Nigerian football development at all levels,” he reportedly said.

His comments bring clarity to the speculation and reaffirm his commitment to administrative and developmental duties rather than a return to direct coaching responsibilities. For now, Eric Chelle remains in charge as the Super Eagles continue their World Cup qualifying campaign.
