West Ham United manager, David Moyes, has said that the referee Chris Kavanagh disrespected him during their Premier League defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

The former Everton manager expressed his anger after match official Kavanagh refused to award his side a late penalty at the London Stadium.

The Reds managed a narrow 2-1 win over the Hammers as Jurgen Klopp’s side endured a nervy moment in the 88th minute.

West Ham United’s Declan Rice tried to find Danny Ings inside the Reds’ box. Thiago Alcantara intercepted the pass but the ball bounced up onto his arms during a challenge with Ings.

Alcantara cleared the ball but it appeared to have rolled onto his arms and West Ham players, along with Moyes and fans, fervently appealed for a penalty.

The referee, as well as the VAR, waved the appeal off.

“For [the referee] to be so sure that that wasn’t a handball and not even go and check it…” he told BT Sport. “It’s a penalty kick.

“The hardest thing to take is the disrespect from VAR, that VAR wouldn’t have at least said to the referee, ‘this might be worth having a look’.”
