Former Chelsea man, Pat Nevin, has claimed that the club’s young striker, Tyrique George, thought he was ‘finished’ at Stamford Bridge before his outstanding Champions League display against Ajax in midweek.

George, 19, came off the bench to replace Marc Guiu at half-time as Chelsea thumped Ajax 5-1.

He scored just three minutes after his introduction, registering his first-ever Champions League goal.

Former Chelsea star Nevin believes George thought he was ‘finished’ at the club prior to the win over Ajax.

He said that the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap during the summer transfer window threatened the player’s future at the club.

“What a lovely moment for Tyrique George,” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He thought he was getting real chances at Chelsea, and then they went and bought two strikers.

“He thinks that’s him finished and will be sent out. He comes on, scores a goal, and looked really good in that position.

“Among the others, he looked really good, and I am delighted for him.”

George was heading to Fulham towards the end of the summer transfer window, but the move collapsed.
