Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has admitted the period leading into Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Everton was the most difficult since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, despite the positive result.

Recall goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto ended a four-match winless run and lifted Chelsea back into the top four, but Maresca used his post-match media duties to deliver a pointed message.

Frustration despite victory

Speaking after the game, the Italian revealed his dissatisfaction with the lack of backing during a challenging week.

Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because many people didn’t support us,” Maresca said.

However, he added that his comments were made “in general,” rather than being directed specifically at fans or internal figures.

He was quick to clarify that supporters were not the target, stressing his appreciation for their backing.

Injuries and suspensions highlighted

Maresca used the opportunity to underline the scale of Chelsea’s disruption this season, pointing to long absences and suspensions affecting key players.

He noted that Chelsea have played the majority of league matches without Cole Palmer, missed Moises Caicedo for several games due to suspension, and lost striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

“The effort from the players is fantastic, no matter who is playing,” he said, urging external observers to recognise the circumstances under which the squad has been operating.

Context of growing scrutiny

Chelsea’s recent defeat to Atalanta, combined with a congested fixture schedule and heightened expectations, has intensified scrutiny around Maresca.

While results have broadly met targets, criticism has persisted due to inconsistent performances and perceptions shaped by the club’s history.

Maresca has repeatedly stressed that this Chelsea side is a long-term project built around a young squad, not an instant title contender.

Looking ahead

Chelsea now turn their attention to a Carabao Cup quarter-final at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle.

Maresca is expected to expand on his comments at Monday’s press conference, as he continues to manage pressure during a transitional phase for the club.
