Former Manchester United man, Nicky Butt, has shared his choice for the new manager at the club, insisting the next boss must dump Erik ten Hag’s £50 million signing, Manuel Ugarte.
United are looking for a new manager after Amorim was fired on Monday following his criticism of the club’s leadership.
Amorim had won two league titles with the big Portuguese team Sporting before he came to Old Trafford, but during his 14 months as manager, there was no sign of that experience or success.
Manchester United placed 15th in the Premier League last season and kept up the same pattern this time around, even though there were some signs of progress.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will manage Wednesday’s game against Burnley and any other matches until the club names a caretaker manager for the rest of the season.
So, the summer will be the time when Manchester United finally pick a new manager to replace Amorim.
Right now, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is the most likely person to get the job.
But Butt said he hopes one of his old United teammates gets the job, but he also says Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘could do a lot worse’ than picking Michael Carrick.
Carrick, a well-known figure from Old Trafford, mostly made a good impression while he was at Middlesbrough for three years before he was let go last summer.
Carrick took over as United’s temporary manager for a short time after Jose Mourinho was fired in 2018, and he did it again three years later when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was let go.
Butt said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, “I really believe the next Manchester United manager should have a link to the club.
“We might not do much worse than Michael Carrick. I know people will laugh and say he hasn’t been in charge of a top team yet.
“He knows the football club really well, he stays very calm, he’s a United legend, and he did a good job at Middlesbrough. I think they could do a lot worse than bringing Michael Carrick back.
Whoever becomes Amorim’s permanent replacement, Butt hopes they let go of Ugarte, saying he’s not a Manchester United midfielder at all.
United spent £50 million to bring Ugarte from PSG in 2024, but the Uruguay player has not managed to justify that big investment so far.
Butt added, “Ugarte will never be a Manchester United midfielder. Not in a million years would he be a Manchester United midfielder.”
