Former Liverpool star, Jamie Carragher, is unsure if appointing Liam Rosenior will help Chelsea get any nearer to winning the Premier League title.
Rosenior is set to become the new Chelsea manager unless there are any last-minute problems following Enzo Maresca’s departure from the position on New Year’s Day.
Rosenior, who is now managing the French team, Strasbourg, which is also owned by BlueCo, will have a meeting with the Stamford Bridge team leaders on Monday for in-person discussions.
While there’s no official confirmation, people are expecting Chelsea to hire Rosenior before their next match, which is the West London derby against Fulham on Wednesday.
Because of this, Strasbourg’s president, Marc Keller, has already begun looking for new candidates to replace Rosenior and has narrowed it down to a final list of three people.
In Chelsea’s first match after Maresca left, Enzo Fernandez scored a goal in the last moments of the game to make it 1-1 against Manchester City.
Calum McFarlane was Chelsea coach for the game at the Etihad Stadium, but he will go back to working with the U21 team once Rosenior is named as the new coach.
Rosenior has been a manager at three different clubs so far: Strasbourg, Hull City, and Derby County.
Carragher has raised doubts about the expected appointment of Rosenior and believes the job is coming too early for the 41-year-old former pundit.
Carragher said on Sky Sports, “I’ve been pretty harsh about the way [Chelsea owners] have handled things over the past three and a half years.
“If you look at the timeline of managers: Thomas Tuchel, a manager who won the Champions League. It seems they’re going to take over Liam Rosenior, who has coached Derby, Hull, and Strasbourg.
“It’s a good chance for him, but Chelsea Football Club and their fans aren’t used to making such choices. The players are used to having famous managers like Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink, and Antonio Conte come in and make a big difference for their club.
“I don’t see Rosenior doing that. His goal is to ensure they qualify for the Champions League next season, and they are definitely able to achieve that.
“We think about five Premier League teams making it to the Champions League, just like last year.
“But I don’t think this appointment will help Chelsea win a Premier League title or a Champions League trophy, and that’s what Chelsea should be aiming for, which is what the fans have become used to over the past 20 years.”
