Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has defended manager, Ruben Amorim’s system at the club.

Scholes spoke while criticizing Manchester United’s hierarchy over their summer recruitment as he suggested that they focused on the wrong area of the pitch during the transfer window.

The former England midfielder noted that Man United’s poor start to the new season has to do with the quality of the players and not the manager’s system.

This is coming following the Red Devils’ recent Premier League derby 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

“I actually don’t think the [Amorim’s] system was the problem, if you look at the stats, Man United had more possession than Man City at their ground,” Scholes told BBC5 Live.

“That does not tell you they got overrun in midfield, I don’t think they did, but the quality of player in there just is not quite up to standard.

“I thought all summer, a central midfielder with legs, who can play, who can control a game of football will be an absolute priority and it never seemed to happen.

“Maybe they panicked a bit towards the end and [Carlos] Baleba came up, but it was never something they really planned for. Did we really need to get to that Grimsby game to realise Onana was not good enough?

“The recruitment side went to buy forwards, but did it need three of them? I am not sure it did. I don’t think they’ve addressed it at all.”
