Wayne Rooney has revealed he almost joined Newcastle before moving to Manchester United from Everton.
In 2004, Rooney signed for United as an 18-year-old.
He went on to become a legend at Old Trafford, scoring 253 goals in 559 matches.
However, things could have been different, as there were other clubs keen on his signature as a teenager.
Newcastle tried to sign him and Rooney even spoke with club legend Alan Shearer and iconic manager Sir Bobby Robson.
“I would have certainly went [to Newcastle],” Rooney revealed on his self-titled podcast The Wayne Rooney Show.
“Manchester United wanted to wait a season and then sign me the year after they did sign me. Newcastle put a bid in and if Manchester United hadn’t come in, I would have gone to Newcastle.
“Those two were bidding against each other. I wanted to go to Manchester United, but I spoke with Sir Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer.”
