Manchester United legends, Peter Schmeichel and Paul Scholes have questioned the club’s ‘weird’ decision to replace Rasmus Hojlund with Benjamin Sesko in the summer.

Manchester United signed Matheus Cunha for £62.5million from Wolves, brought in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for £71m and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as they strengthened Ruben Amorim’s squad.

They also replaced Andre Onana with £18.1m rated Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammes, sending the Cameroonian on loan to Trabzonspor.

Hojlund was also sent on loan to Napoli following the arrival of Sesko. He has already netted four times in six games for the Italian side.

Schmeichel, a legendary goalkeeper, echoed what Scholes said earlier, telling the BBC’s Sacked In The Morning podcast, “The signing of Sesko was a bit weird to me.

“We had Hojlund, starved of service for two years. You only need to see what he is doing now at Napoli with Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with.”

Schmeichel said “I have consistently said Hojlund will be a 25-goal-a-season striker, but he needs service.

“At the time, we brought Cunha and Mbeumo in – players who would give Hojlund first-class service.

“We spent £70m or so on Sesko [but] we don’t have that number six we should have.”

Ruben Amorim’s team will return to the Premier League this weekend after the international break with a game with Liverpool.

United beat Sunderland 2-0 in their Premier League game before the break.
