Arsenal legend, Ian Wright, has asked the board to back manager Mikel Arteta in the January window.

Wright was speaking after the Gunners were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Emirates on Tuesday.

Although Arteta’s men dominated the match, they missed big chances through Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz.

Arsenal also struggled to break the Magpies down and often looked bereft of inspiration in attack.

In the last month, they have also dropped points against Fulham, Everton and Brighton, falling behind in the Premier League title race.

Wright has claimed the team will continue to struggle except they reinforce the squad.

He told ITV: “He (Arteta) needs help. I know it’s very difficult to get anything in this January window but he needs something else because if it’s gonna carry on like this, it’s going to be very difficult to score.

“We’re not scoring with the corners, we’re not scoring with the chances we’re making, something needs to change. Something needs to happen…”

So far, Arteta has signed 30 players for around £714million, with this coming in at a £500.14m net spend, according to data from Football Transfers.
