Rene Meulensteen, a former assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has critically assessed Raphael Varane, claiming the Frenchman cannot manage the pace of the Premier League.

Meulensteen also identified one big problem with Man United’s midfield under manager Erik ten Hag this season.

“He [Varane] can’t manage the pace. The Premier League is dynamic. Everything goes at 100 miles an hour,” Meulensteen said via UtdPlug.

“That is the big problem with the midfield. They don’t have energy and that is how the defense struggles.”

Varane joined Manchester United in 2021 from Real Madrid.

The Frenchman established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world during his time at Real Madrid.

But he has so far failed to replicate that at the Red Devils.
