Former Premier League star, Michael Owen has said that Manchester United lack what it takes to challenge either Arsenal or Manchester City in the English top-flight league next season.

The Red Devils are doing well, having won the Carabao Cup, still in the FA Cup and could still win the Europa League this season, but Owen, who is a former player of the club, said they need more to challenge for bigger trophies next season.

Manchester United also look set to return to the Champions League next season as they sit third – six points above fifth-placed Tottenham – with eight games to go.

But Erik ten Hag’s side are 11 points behind Man City and 15 behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

“I’m still a far way from being convinced that Man United are going to challenge Arsenal and Man City.

“I wouldn’t have Manchester United as being challengers to Arsenal and Manchester City just yet. I still think they need more in that squad.

“I do think they’re short on quality compared to the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City at the moment,” he said.
