Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has hit out at his erstwhile national teammate, Jamie Carragher, for disrespecting Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Ferdinand, a former Manchester United defender, feels that Carragher’s criticism of Casemiro was too quick and ‘disrespectful’.

Casemiro is one of the players in Ruben Amorim’s squad that has shone brightly this season as the team is beginning to find their feet.

Manchester United are victorious in their last three consecutive games against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton and are now up to fifth in the Premier League table.

Casemiro joined Manchester United from Real Madrid for £70m in 2022 and performed well in his first campaign.

After Manchester United were beaten 4-0 in the Premier League in May 2024, Carragher slammed the Brazilian, asking him to “leave the football before the football leaves you.”

Carragher said that football had left Casemiro, asking the Brazil international to retire and allow younger and more effective players to play the role.

As the player appears to be enjoying a mini-revival at the moment, Ferdinand has hit out at Carragher, saying: “It takes me back to what was said by Jamie Carragher about, ‘leave the football,’” Ferdinand continued.

“I said at the time, I thought it was highly disrespectful when you’re talking about a five-time Champions League winner who’s going through a change in approach to football, going through a time where he looked out of sorts.

“It was highly disrespectful for someone who’s achieved so much in the game.”

Manchester United play Nottingham Forest in their next game, and the Brazilian midfielder will be looking to continue United’s winning run.
