Liverpool legend, John Aldridge, has warned the club they are making the mistake of selling a superior player to sign someone of lesser quality.
He believes that Liverpool’s backup goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher is better than Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will be arriving at the club in the summer.
The Georgian goalkeeper will leave the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia for Anfield in the summer of 2025, with Liverpool having agreed to sign him.
Kelleher was called upon on numerous occasions last season due to first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson’s injuries.
The Irish goalkeeper did impress, making 26 appearances and keeping five clean sheets.
And despite rumours he could leave Anfield, he opted to stay.
But Liverpool has turned towards Mamardashvili to become Alisson’s long-term replacement at the club.
This will likely force Kelleher out of the club if he wants to play regular football.
Aldridge believes this is not the best decision the club has taken, insisting that Kelleher is better than Mamardashvili.
He told Sunday World, “Another player who can’t be allowed to leave in the January transfer window is Caoimhín Kelleher.
“I think Liverpool are making a mistake with their Ireland keeper as Kelleher is better than Georgian Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will arrive at Anfield next summer.
“Yet that signing is now done, so Kelleher will need to leave Liverpool next summer. Offers might also come in for him in January, but Liverpool need to keep their back-up keeper, as he has proved what an important part of their push for trophies he could be in the second half of the season.”
