Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, has explained her brother’s tears after his penalty miss against Slovenia at Euro 2024 on Monday.

Ronaldo was distraught after he missed an extra-time first-half penalty against Slovenia in the Euro 2024 last-16 encounter.

The 39-year-old had the chance to put Roberto Martinez’s side in front, but goalkeeper Jan Oblak denied the Al Nassr forward from the spot.

After the match, Elma Aveiro posted on Instagram, explaining her brother’s tears as she wrote:

“This scene was the moment he saw our lifelong mother on the giant screen.

“Do you know what it means? They don’t know. No one will ever know. Not everything is football, fame and money.”

Portugal eventually won the game 3-0 on penalties shootout.

Their goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, won the Man of the Match award as he saved three penalties.
