Oyo State Fire Service Agency on Thursday successfully prevented a potentially devastating fire following a petrol tanker accident at the Flower Mill area, Toll Gate, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan.

According to the agency, a distress call was received at 9:06 a.m. on February 12, 2026, reporting that a tanker carrying petrol had lost control and overturned on the highway.

Firefighters, led by Chief Fire Superintendent, Adesina, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the team discovered a DAF trailer tanker, loaded with approximately 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, lying overturned and spilling its contents onto the road. The tanker’s registration number is yet to be confirmed.

The fire crew promptly applied foam chemical compounds to neutralise the petrol and prevent any ignition, averting what could have escalated into a serious fire disaster.

No casualties were reported, and properties worth millions of naira were safeguarded due to the swift intervention.

Traffic disruption caused by the accident has since been cleared, with normal vehicular movement restored.

Security during the operation was provided by the Nigerian Police, Toll Gate Division, and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Oluyole Division. The fire team returned to the station at 4:04 p.m. and remained on standby for further emergencies.

Reacting to the incident, Hon. (Dr) Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, urged motorists to exercise caution on highways to prevent avoidable accidents.

He also highlighted the importance of equipping both commercial and private vehicles with fire extinguishers to contain fire incidents at their early stages.

The agency reminded residents to promptly report fire emergencies and provide precise locations via its emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or the toll-free number 615.
