Former Manchester United man, Nicky Butt, has said that the club must regret one of their transfer decisions last summer.
According to him, the Red Devils will regret allowing academy graduate, Angel Gomes leave Old Trafford.
He noted that the midfielder is currently flying at Ligue1 side, Marseille.
Gomes was six years old when he joined the Red Devils academy and was tipped for big things after making his debut for the first-team in 2017, aged just 16.
However, lack of playing time at the club under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, made him leave the club on a free transfer, joining Lille.
His performance at Lille earned him a maiden call-up to England’s senior squad under Lee Carsley in 2024.
United wanted him back to Old Trafford in the summer but the 25-year-old ended up at another French side Marseille
“They have just sold two of the academy products who are now shining at other clubs – Rashford and McTominay,” Butt told The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
He added, “[Gomes] is absolutely flying at Marseille.”
Butt, himself a member of the famed Class of ’92, says serious changes are needed at Manchester United to get United’s academy back to its best.
“With hindsight, it is easy to say, and it’s easier for two old Man United players who came through the academy to say ‘that’s rubbish, that’s not great’,” he said.
