Ahead of the Super Eagles of Nigeria World Cup qualifying play-off game, Marseille manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has lavished Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with praise.
Nigeria and Gabon will lock horns in next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff.
Nigeria needed to beat Benin Republic with at least four goals to nothing in Uyo to be sure of a playoff place.
A dramatic late goal from Frank Onyeka ensured that Nigeria advanced to the playoff where they will now face Aubameyang’s Gabon.
The former Arsenal striker has been in scintillating form for his country since the qualifying campaign, scoring seven goals in five matches.
The former Chelsea attacker has also scored four goals and provided four assists in eight games for Marseille this season.
He helped the Ligue1 giants beat Le Havre 6–2 at the weekend and in what might sound as a warning to the Super Eagles and Nigerian football fans, De Zerbi hailed the attacker while highlighting his attributes.
He told Le Phoceen, “He’s a true champion, a different kind of player.
“I’m discovering him to be even stronger than I imagined. He has a lot of qualities, he’s not just a goalscorer.
“He can make assists, bring speed, depth, he’s a hard worker too… He’s a champion.”
Nigeria will play Gabon in the semifinals of the playoffs on November 13 in Morocco.
