Nigerian Afrobeats star Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about how he came up with his famous stage name.
Speaking in a chat with tennis legend Roger Federer, the Grammy-winning musician said the name came from his childhood obsession with comic books and superheroes. Burna Boy recalled spending time creating his own characters and drawing them, which eventually led to the name that defines him today.
He explained that his love for superheroes made him picture himself as one with powers tied to fire. “I used to draw superheroes when I was younger. I used to do the comic drawing of them. That’s how I got the name Burna Boy ’cause I wanted to be a character in the comic book,” he said.
Burna Boy also talked about the impact of Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti on his career, sharing that his grandfather introduced him to all of Fela’s albums, which heavily influenced his music journey.
