International music star and record executive Akon has opened up about one of the biggest “what if” moments in his career, revealing that he once had the opportunity to sign Canadian rapper Drake but could not complete the deal because he lacked the required funding.
Speaking about his journey in the music industry, Akon explained that Drake was still an emerging talent at the time. However, securing the deal would have required a $1 million investment, which he was unable to raise.
According to the Senegalese-American singer, missing out on Drake ultimately led him to another life-changing opportunity. He recalled that Nigerian singer and music executive Banky W later introduced him to a young Wizkid, whose talent immediately caught his attention.
Akon said he decided to sign Wizkid instead, a move that would later prove to be a significant milestone in the Afrobeats star’s rise to global recognition.
Reflecting on the experience, Akon said:
“I missed the chance to sign Drake because I didn’t have $1 million. Then Banky W introduced me to Wizkid, and I signed him instead.”
The revelation has sparked conversations among music fans, with many describing it as an example of how unexpected setbacks can sometimes lead to equally rewarding opportunities.
