Nollywood veteran Ngozi Nwosu has shared emotional details about her difficult marriage, revealing that she experienced physical abuse from her late husband even before they officially tied the knot.
During a heartfelt conversation with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu recalled that she had once decided to end the relationship entirely. However, she was convinced by her elder sister to proceed with the wedding. According to her, her sister insisted that the man’s behaviour would improve once they were married and encouraged her to “be patient.”
Nwosu explained that the signs of violence began during their courtship, and those early warning signals nearly made her walk away. One incident, in particular, left her deeply traumatized.
She recounted that she had gone into the kitchen to boil water when he forcefully broke down the door, yanked her by the hair, and caused her to bleed. Shocked and overwhelmed, she said she instinctively grabbed a pestle to defend herself. Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, rushed in and found her in distress.
The actress said she initially refused to sign the marriage register but eventually yielded due to family pressure.
Nwosu stressed that marriage should never be endured at the cost of one’s well-being.
“Once a man hits you, be prepared for it to continue. It doesn’t just stop,” she cautioned.
Looking back, she encouraged women to leave any relationship where violence is present before or after marriage emphasizing that abusive partners rarely change.
“If you notice violence before the wedding, it won’t disappear after. Don’t wait, don’t hope. Leave before it becomes worse,” she advised.
Nwosu said she now tells her story publicly to help other women recognise early signs of abuse and to remind them that their safety matters more than societal expectations.
