Igbos are trending on social media over videos showing newly unveiled mansions in their villages ahead of the Christmas celebrations.

The Christmas holiday is traditionally a period when many Igbos travel back to their ancestral homes to reunite with family and community members. There is a widely held belief that, no matter where one lives or works, it is important to return home periodically to reconnect with one’s roots and people.

This tradition is closely tied to the Igbo philosophy known as “Aku ruo uno” (also rendered as “Aku luo uno”), a popular proverb and socioeconomic principle that roughly translates to “wealth reaches home” or “bring your wealth back home.”

The idea encourages Igbos living outside their home region or abroad to channel their success into their communities of origin by investing in houses, businesses, infrastructure, and social development. For many, building a home in the village is not just a personal achievement but a visible symbol of success, identity, and commitment to one’s heritage.

As Christmas approaches, videos of expansive homes, gated compounds, and celebratory homecomings have flooded social media platforms, sparking conversations around culture, prosperity, and the enduring importance of community ties.
