Michael Kayode has revealed his ambition to represent Italy at senior international level, while expressing pride in his Nigerian heritage.
The Brentford right-back, born in Borgomanero to Nigerian parents Victoria and Anthony, is eligible to represent both Italy and Nigeria. However, he says his immediate goal is to earn a senior call-up from the Azzurri.
Italy dream remains priority
Kayode has already represented Italy at youth level, earning caps with the country’s U18, U19 and U21 teams. His performances at international youth tournaments have strengthened Italy’s position in the race for his long-term allegiance.
“For every player, it’s a dream to be in the national team, especially now because of the qualifications for the World Cup,” Kayode told The Athletic. “I really hope we qualify.”
He added that club performances will ultimately determine his chances of being selected.
“It’s important to do very well at the club because if you don’t do well at your club, you don’t get a call-up. So I just think about Brentford and if I get the opportunity with Italy, that’s it.”
Nigeria still an option
Despite prioritising Italy, Kayode acknowledged the support he receives from Nigerian fans and remains appreciative of his roots.
“I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me. The opportunity to play for both is amazing,” he said.
The defender is reportedly being monitored by both Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso and Eric Chelle of the Nigeria national football team.
Youth success with Italy
Kayode previously made headlines when he scored the winning goal in the final of the 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, helping Italy lift the title.
With the 2026 World Cup qualification cycle intensifying, the 21-year-old will hope consistent performances in the Premier League can earn him his first senior opportunity with the Azzurri.
