Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi has stirred online debate after criticizing some Muslims for prioritizing donations to NGOs during Ramadan over helping struggling family members.

In an Instagram post, the actress questioned the choices of well-meaning donors, asking if they have also checked on relatives, unemployed neighbors, widows, and others in need within their immediate and extended circles.

She wrote:

“Did you check on your family members, hungry neighbors, widows or widowers, and those who lost their jobs in your community to see if they need help with meals during Ramadan before donating to random NGO accounts online all in the name of feeding people for Ramadan? #charitybeginsathome ✌️“

Kemi’s message emphasizes the idea that charitable acts should begin at home, particularly during Ramadan a period traditionally marked by generosity, compassion, and support for the less fortunate.

While acknowledging the importance of organized charitable work, she stressed that taking care of family members in need should not be overlooked.

Her post has sparked a variety of reactions on social media, with some users agreeing that family welfare should come first, while others argued that public charitable giving is equally significant.
