Afrobeats star Femi Kuti has revealed that his late father, music legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, experienced financial hardship even as his music began gaining widespread recognition.

In an interview with The Afropolitan, Femi recounted that during the time Fela’s breakthrough track, Jeun Ko Ku, was receiving heavy airplay, the family still struggled to meet basic needs.

The Grammy-nominated musician shared that they lived on Agege Motor Road prior to the establishment of the Kalakuta Republic, and despite Fela’s growing popularity, life at home was challenging.

“He was very poor. He couldn’t even provide enough food for us, his children,” Femi explained. “We were living at No. 14A Agege Motor Road back then, long before Kalakuta. Every radio station was playing Fela’s first Afrobeats hit, Jeun Ko Ku. Even he seemed surprised by how well it was received.”
