Following his side’s 3-0 shocking defeat, manager Arne Slot has opened up on why his side lost the Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Carabao Cup fixture.
Arne Slot, in his post-match press conference after the shocking 3-0 defeat in the Liverpool vs Crystal Palace fixture played in the Carabao Cup, has revealed why his side lost while revealing what he would do to rectify this.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted that his side’s loss to Crystal Palace was a tough one to take, especially as it meant crashing out of the competition. However, the Dutch coach stood by his team selection, insisting it was consistent with his approach in similar rounds last season.
“It is always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition,” Slot said after the match. “But it is the same selection I did tonight as I did last season in rounds like this. There are many reasons, maybe, why we’ve lost six out of seven – none of them are good enough to accept losing so many. At Liverpool, losing six out of seven is always too much.”
Slot pointed to the team’s congested fixture schedule and player fitness challenges as contributing factors, though he refused to use them as excuses.
“If I look at our performance against Brentford, two days after playing Frankfurt away, I saw a team that maybe struggled with playing three games in seven days,” he explained. “It’s not an excuse to lose, but it’s not a complete surprise if I see some players struggling, especially those adapting from other leagues to both Premier League and Champions League levels.”
Liverpool’s injury situation also influenced Slot’s decisions. The manager noted that with only 15 or 16 senior players currently fit, rotation was necessary to protect his squad ahead of their next fixture against Aston Villa.
“The last time I played a player we thought was ready but wasn’t, Alexander Isak got injured at Frankfurt,” Slot recalled. “And the last time we faced Southampton, Giovanni Leoni went off injured and Hugo Ekitike was sent off after two yellows. So with limited options, it felt right to use some academy players and non-starters.”
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Slot maintained that his decision-making was justified.
“I haven’t changed my opinion about the selection after the result,” he said. “Even with our starters, we haven’t managed to win much against Palace either.”
The loss continues a worrying trend for Liverpool, who have now lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions. Slot will be hoping his team can quickly rediscover their form as they prepare to face Aston Villa in two days.
