Nollywood actress and filmmaker Efe Irele has highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance in the Nigerian film industry, urging producers to craft movies that are both financially viable and emotionally resonant.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, Irele praised the strides made by Nigerian filmmakers but emphasized that sustaining profitability is essential for the industry’s long-term growth.

“I have to acknowledge the work many filmmakers are doing; we’re all raising the standards. We need more stories that touch the heart, but at the same time, commercial films remain important. The industry must continue generating revenue to thrive,” she said.

Irele explained that the rise of streaming platforms has significantly influenced how filmmakers tell their stories, changing audience expectations and habits.

“Cinema attendance isn’t what it used to be because streaming offers convenience. We need to create films that entertain, make people laugh, and provide an escape because that’s what viewers are seeking these days,” she added.

At the same time, Irele stressed the need for movies that inspire and move audiences emotionally, noting that such stories are crucial to keeping the art form meaningful and impactful.
