Mastantuono Has Three Games to Save Real Madrid Career – Reports

Franco Mastantuono’s dream start at Real Madrid has taken a sharp turn into dangerous territory. Once hailed as the club’s next big thing, the 18-year-old Argentine now faces a crucial three-game stretch that could determine whether he remains part of Xabi Alonso’s long-term plans or fades into the background of the Santiago Bernabéu.

It all began so brightly. When Mastantuono arrived from River Plate in a €45 million deal, Madridistas were buzzing about his raw talent and fearless creativity. The young midfielder, who burst into the lineup after impressing in training, looked like a revelation. His quick feet, vision, and energy injected life into Real Madrid’s midfield, earning him starts just weeks into his debut season. Fans and pundits drew comparisons to Federico Valverde’s early years — another South American who had to fight for his place and eventually became indispensable.

But the glow faded almost as fast as it appeared. Since being subbed off in the 55th minute against Getafe on October 19, Mastantuono’s involvement has been minimal. He’s logged only six late minutes in the Champions League against Juventus and was completely benched during Real Madrid’s El Clásico victory over Barcelona. For a player touted as a generational talent, that’s a brutal reality check.

Reports suggest Xabi Alonso’s patience is wearing thin. While the manager publicly insists it’s part of the young player’s “adaptation process,” insiders reveal the decision stems from frustration with Mastantuono’s inconsistency. His performances against Getafe and Villarreal were reportedly “uninspired,” with coaches criticizing a lack of urgency and off-ball discipline — two non-negotiables in Alonso’s system.

Still, it’s not all doom. Alonso is known for his nurturing approach to youth, and there’s a belief inside the club that this is more of a test than a punishment. The manager wants Mastantuono to prove he can handle pressure, adapt to tactical demands, and recover from adversity — the kind of mental resilience that separates Real Madrid’s stars from its could-have-beens.

The timing, though, couldn’t be worse. Real Madrid are entering a demanding stretch of fixtures: Valencia, Liverpool, and Rayo Vallecano all before the international break. These are matches that require sharpness, composure, and tactical understanding — qualities Mastantuono must display if he’s to regain his place. With veterans like Valverde, Bellingham, and Camavinga dominating midfield spots, his margin for error is razor-thin.

Madrid’s dressing room is said to remain supportive. Senior players like Luka Modrić and Dani Carvajal have reportedly encouraged the teenager to keep working hard and stay focused. “Everyone at this club has had to fight for their place,” one teammate was quoted as saying. “The talent is there — now he just needs to match it with maturity.”

The fans, however, are divided. Some view the reports as sensationalism, arguing that an 18-year-old shouldn’t be burdened with “career-defining” pressure this early. Others believe Real Madrid’s standards demand immediate impact — especially when a club spends nearly €50 million on potential. Social media debates have been fierce, with one supporter posting, “This isn’t Castilla anymore. You’re in the biggest club in the world — prove it or perish.”

Comparisons to past prospects haven’t helped either. Many remember Martin Ødegaard’s early struggles at Madrid before finding success elsewhere, and some fear Mastantuono could follow the same path. Yet others point to Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior as proof that patience pays off — both endured early criticism before blossoming into world-class performers.

Behind the scenes, Real Madrid’s board reportedly has no plans to loan him out just yet. The belief is that exposure to high-pressure competition, even from the bench, will accelerate his growth. However, sources warn that if Mastantuono continues to struggle for minutes, a loan in January could become a real possibility — likely to a La Liga side where he can play regularly.

For now, the ball is firmly in Mastantuono’s court. Three matches, three opportunities to remind everyone why he was once called the future of Madrid’s midfield. Whether he seizes that chance or sinks under the weight of expectation will shape not just his season — but potentially his entire career at the Bernabéu.

Xabi Alonso, known for his calm pragmatism, summed it up best in training this week: “Franco has the talent to be great. But talent at Real Madrid is only the beginning — not the guarantee.”
