Former Paris Saint-Germain player, Jerome Rothen, has insisted that forward Lionel Messi doesn’t deserve a big ovation from the club’s fans at Parc des Princes after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina in Qatar.

According to Rothen, Messi completely wasted his first year at PSG and deserved boos from PSG fans.

Messi, 35, had a season to forget when he moved from Barcelona to join PSG in 2021.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner scored just six goals in the league that season.

Speaking to RMC Sport, Rothen said, “He [Lionel Messi] has been at PSG for a year and a half, and the first year was completely wasted. I don’t mind there being time to adapt but Leo, for me, his attitude for a year was too far, like Neymar and that is why there was a lot of criticism of them.

“Yes, they [the fans] went too far last year, some insulted him. But that was because they were like me: we were crazy to see Messi in [the French] Ligue 1 and we were extremely disappointed. And there, you’re going to ask them, with the World Cup, to give him an ovation? And there, he’s going to seek comfort? No, no, no.”
