Lionel Messi is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract with Inter Miami, which would see the Argentine icon remain with the MLS franchise through their transition into a new era.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, negotiations between Messi and Inter Miami are close to completion, with managing owner Jorge Mas confirming that a decision is expected within 60 to 90 days.

Mas added: “The stars are aligning for something great… My hope has always been to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026.”

Messi, 37, joined Inter Miami in 2023 on a free transfer and has since delivered on and off the pitch.

He has netted 42 goals in 48 appearances, led the club to a Leagues Cup title and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and significantly boosted the MLS’s global profile.

If finalised, the new deal will secure Messi’s presence for the club’s highly anticipated move to the $1 billion Miami Freedom Park, a 25,000-seat stadium slated to open in 2026 as part of a 131-acre development project.

The contract extension would also ensure Messi leads Inter Miami at this summer’s revamped Club World Cup, where they’ll face Palmeiras, Porto and Al-Ahly in Group A.

In short, Inter Miami are banking on Messi not just for goals, but as the cornerstone of their expansion into a global football brand and all signs indicate the partnership will continue.
