Protesters chant and sing solidarity songs as they barricade barricade the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to protest against police brutality and the killing of protesters by the military, at Magboro, Ogun State, on October 21, 2020. - Buildings in Nigeria's main city of Lagos were torched on October 21, 2020 and sporadic clashes erupted after the shooting of peaceful protesters in which Amnesty International said security forces had killed several people. Witnesses said gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 people on the evening of October 20, 2020, to disperse them after a curfew was imposed to end spiralling protests over police brutality and deep-rooted social grievances. A yet-to-be-identified young man was k!lled by a mob after he allegedly disrupted traffic along the FMC–OSAMCA corridor of the Idi-Aba–Kemta–OGTV road in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Wednesday morning, March 4.

The Nation reports that eyewitnesses claim the deceased who was armed with heavy metal objects in both hands, blocked one lane of the four-lane carriageway at about 10:20 a.m., forcing motorists to a halt and threatening anyone who attempted to drive past. The action reportedly led to a gridlock that lasted nearly 30 minutes, as motorists and pedestrians remained stranded amid fears for their safety.

Distress calls were said to have been placed to the Kemta Division of the Nigeria Police Force for intervention. However, before officers arrived, some youths in the area reportedly mobilised and confronted the man, striking him repeatedly with wooden objects.Nigerian News Updates

By the time security operatives reached the scene, the man had been overpowered and was lying unconscious on the ground. Despite the arrival of the police, members of the crowd continued to assault him after he was removed from the road to ease the traffic congestion.
