Mohamed Salah has been named Premier League Player of the Season, capping an exceptional campaign in which the Liverpool forward has scored 28 goals and delivered 18 assists, five goals more than any other player.

The Egyptian international, now 32, heads into the final game of the season against Crystal Palace just two assists shy of equaling the single-season record held jointly by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

This prestigious award, determined by a combination of public votes and a panel of football experts, marks the second time Salah has claimed the honour, having first won it in the 2017–18 season. His win brings an end to Manchester City’s four-year dominance of the award. The last non-City player to receive the accolade was Salah’s teammate Virgil van Dijk in the 2018–19 season.

Van Dijk, who also signed a contract extension with Liverpool earlier this season, was among the shortlisted contenders Salah edged out in the vote. The others included Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.

This is Salah’s second major individual honour this month. He was earlier named the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year, earning nearly 90 percent of the votes, the widest winning margin in the award’s history this century.
