MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola has stated that truly unlimited data plans do not exist anywhere in the world unless customers are paying an extremely high price, a claim that has drawn pushback from Nigerians living abroad who have shared screenshots of their own unlimited data subscriptions abroad.

Speaking at a recent event, Toriola said: “The issue of unlimited data on mobile networks: it doesn’t exist anywhere in the world except if you’re paying a fortune. There’s a limit because you can never build enough capacity for everyone to be on an unlimited bundle, and you think you’ll provide a quality of service that is decent.”

However, some Nigerians residing overseas have pushed back against the assertion, pointing out that unlimited data plans cost them no more than the equivalent of three hours of work at minimum wage in countries such as the United Kingdom. Several have taken to social media to share screenshots of their monthly subscriptions as evidence.
