Rio Ferdinand has revealed that his wife wanted to kill him after he took a phone call at 1 am with former Manchester United team-mate, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Back in the summer of 2021, Ronaldo found himself set to depart Serie A giants Juventus.

After three years in Italy, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was also linked with a stunning return to Manchester to join Pep Guardiola’s team.

In the end, Ronaldo rejoined United, although he left again less than 18 months later following a fallout with manager Erik ten Hag – with CR7 released as a free agent.

Ferdinand, speaking on the Portuguese’s YouTube channel, said: “We spoke on the phone when you were going to go and sign at Man United when you were negotiating to come back, and my wife wanted to kill me!

“It was 1 o’clock in the morning and you rang me: ‘Rio what’s going on, can we sort this out?’ You ended up signing for United. Initially, that must have been a beautiful thing for you because I remember on the phone you sounded so happy. Then obviously it went a bit sour.”
