A debate has sparked up on Nigerian X space after a political influencer, Theo Abu, described the practice of Igbo businessmen opening a small shop for their apprentice after years of service as a ‘’form of slavery”.
Theo said this while reacting to a trending video of a businessman being celebrated for opening a shop for his apprentice who had just completed years of apprenticeship under him. The video showed the apprentice breaking down in tears as he appreciated his boss, who gifted him the new boutique stock with new clothes.
Theo saw the video and kicked against the reward the apprentice received after eight years of service. He described it as low-key slavery and argued that bosses need to come up with better ways to reward their apprentices after years of service, arguing that the apprenticeship scheme needs reform.
‘’Hear me out: this is what the boy gets after eight years of service?
Everything in this shop, including the shop rent, is worth less than ₦5 million in today’s Nigeria.

This is low-key slavery, and the bosses need to compensate these boys adequately.
A good reward system and a structured agreement on what the boys will receive at the end of their service need to be created.
The Nwa Boy apprenticeship system needs urgent reform.”
His post elicited reactions from Netizens.
