NFL club, the New England Patriots are set to release Stefon Diggs.
Diggs, 32, who signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the AFC champions last year, was informed by team officials that he would be released on Wednesday, March 11, a league source told ESPN.
“THANK YOU for a hell of a year,” Diggs wrote in his Instagram Stories on Wednesday, March 4. “We family forever.”
News of Diggs’ pending release comes weeks after Diggs pleaded not guilty to charges of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery.
His time with the team brought drama, starting from last May, when the NFL star was seen in a viral video in which he passed a mystery substance to women on a yacht, to December, when he was arrested after a woman accused him of slapping and choking her.
Off the field, Diggs’ relationship with rapper Cardi B — with whom he shares a baby born in November — came to an end just as the Patriots reached the Super Bowl last month.
In Diggs’ 11th season in the NFL and only season with the Patriots, he caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, according to league stats.
According to ESPN, Diggs’ salary cap charge may have impacted the Patriots’ decision; it was set to rise from $10.5 million to $26.5 million, and had he remained on the roster through next week, Diggs would have been due an additional $6 million in guaranteed money.
At the NFL combine last week, coach Mike Vrabel spoke about Diggs’ future with the team.
“He worked extremely hard in the time that he was rehabbing from the knee,” Vrabel said about Diggs’ recovery from a torn ACL in 2024, according to USA Today. “I think he was just a really good presence each and every week.”
