Arsenal legend David O’Leary has told Mikel Arteta and his boys they will be missing a golden opportunity if they fail to win the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners have topped the league table for the majority of the season but were leapfrogged by Manchester City at the weekend ahead of their clash with Chelsea later this evening.

Manchester City defeated Arsenal 4-1 in their title decider last Wednesday and also have two games in hand, meaning that they will win the title just by winning their remaining matches.

O’Leary told talkSPORT that though finishing second won’t be a bad result in the end, the Gunners had a better opportunity to claim the title this season when the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool are struggling.

He also believed that the likes of Newcastle United and Manchester United would come up stronger next season thereby making Arsenal’s hopes slimmer.

“It’s about opportunities, and I don’t think we will have a better opportunity winning the league than this year,” he said.

“Because Chelsea, they come to town tonight, a mess they’re in, Liverpool I don’t think will have such a poor season.

“I think Man United will get better, Newcastle we’ve seen, I think they’ll get better. I think there has been an opportunity. Big opportunity missed if we don’t bring it over the line.”
