Rivers United head coach, Stanley Eguma is upbeat his side can successfully defend their Nigeria Premier Football League title.

The Port Harcourt Dwellers claimed the NPFL title for the first time last season.

Eguma’s side started the defence of their title with a scrappy 2-1 win against former champions, Lobi Stars, at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.

Kenechukwu Agu’s late penalty handed the hosts all three points in the keenly contested encounter.

Despite the nature of the win, Eguma is adamant his team can beat the 19 other teams to the title again.

“We’ve started building a new team and we are moving forward. Last season we ended up as champions and this season, we want to defend it,” Eguma said after the game.

Rivers United will face Sunshine Stars in their next game on Thursday.
