Special Intelligence Squad of the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 12 suspected railway vandals and impounded two trucks conveying large quantities of stolen railway sleepers.

National spokesperson for the Corps, Olusola Odumosu made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday, July 24.

He said the arrests were made during three separate operations by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) at Kafanchan-Kwoi Road, Jama’a Local Council of Kaduna State, and Agwan-Kuje village, Kadarko area in Keana Local Council of Nasarawa State, as well as at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, Keffi- Abuja Expressway.

He said: “Following intelligence report, the first five arrests were made when suspected vandals were loading the vandalised and stolen railway sleepers at a bush in Nasarawa.

“A long open-body Man Diesel trailer already loaded with over 500 pieces of the vandalised railway sleepers, alleged to be owned by the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) was also concealed under sacks of groundnut dust.”

He added: “In another operation at NYSC orientation camp, Keffi-Abuja Expressway, three suspected vandals were also arrested while conveying large quantities of vandalised railway sleepers concealed with rice chaff inside a J5 Boxer Bus.

“Another four vandals were arrested by the CG’s SIS while loading railway sleepers into an already filled illegal warehouse in Kaduna.

“Acting on a tip-off, the squad immediately swung into action and succeeded in intercepting one white long open-body truck fully loaded with large quantities of vandalised rail track irons, covered with a blue trampoline.

“All the arrested suspects and the exhibits are subject to a preliminary investigation by the Corps, which will help to make further arrests and subsequent prosecution to reduce the rate of critical infrastructural vandalism in the affected territories.”

Meanwhile, the agency has called on citizens to continually provide credible and useful information that would help in the arrest of vandals and criminals nationwide.

  • The abducted principal of the Junior Secondary School (JSS), Naharati in Abaji Area Council of the FCT, Zakari Abdulkadir Yelwa and his daughter, Hafsat Dauda, have regained their freedom. LIB had reported that kidnappers invaded the victims’ residence opposite the Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Abaji last Tuesday night, October 21, and whisked away the principal, his wife, and his daughter. The principal’s wife, Mrs. Rakiya Zakari Yelwa, was ordered to return home by the kidnappers when she could not walk fast. The principal, while narrating his experience to Daily Trust at his residence on Sunday, October 25, said he and his daughter were freed on Saturday night after paying a N3.1 million ransom. He said life in the kidnappers’ den was like “hell,” and he prays that no one experiences such trauma. The principal said he and his daughter trekked through the forest throughout the night until they arrived at the kidnappers’ camp “On that very night, we walked throughout the night till dawn. As the morning set in, they kept us in a valley until it was getting dark again before we continued trekking until we arrived at their camp,” he said. According to him, his abductors fed him and his daughter with garri and yam, which, he said, they harvested from some people’s farms near the camp. He said the kidnappers used pieces of cloth to cover their faces until they were freed around 6:45 pm on Saturday at a forest that borders Toto LGA of Nasarawa and Kogi states. He added that apart from the N3.1 million cash ransom, the kidnappers also collected two cartons of malt, one carton of milk, bread, and some packets of cigarettes The principal thanked his colleagues, friends, and family members for their support and prayers. He also commended the vigilantes for their swift response during the attack at his residence.
