Organ harvesting: Ekweremadu and wife to know fate today

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice alongside their doctor, Obinna Obeta, will today May 5, face a UK court for sentencing.

The trio was in March this year convicted for conspiring to harvest the kidney of a trader they flew into the UK from Nigeria. The couple and their doctor were arrested in June last year and have been on trial since then.

Organ harvesting: Ekweremadu and wife to know fate today

Justice Jeremy Johnson of Central Criminal Court Old Bailey found them guilty under the modern-day slavery act of the United Kingdom. Though the couple told the court that the organ was for their ailing 25-year-old daughter, Sonia. However, the United Kingdom Modern Slavery act 2015 frowns at Human trafficking under which organ harvesting falls and is punishable with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment upon conviction.
