Victor Osimhen has recalled how Mikel Obi’s generosity left a lasting impact on him during his early days with the Super Eagles.
The Galatasaray striker is currently in Lagos on a short break, despite not being included in Nigeria’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
Reflecting on early inspirations
Speaking during a live session with popular streamer Carter efe, Osimhen revisited his journey from humble beginnings, name-checking Nigerian greats like Nwankwo Kanu, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Odion Ighalo as key influences.
He described Ighalo as both a role model and a personal inspiration, noting the strong relationship they have built over time.
Defining moment with Mikel
However, it was his first interaction with Mikel that stood out most.
“I met Mikel Obi when they first invited me to the Super Eagles,” Osimhen recalled. “We finished eating, and he told me to follow him to his room immediately, and he gave me money.”
Leadership beyond the pitch
Osimhen and Mikel briefly shared the pitch for Nigeria before the former Chelsea midfielder retired from international football in 2019.
