Patrick Vieira has left his position as Genoa head coach by mutual consent, with the club rooted to the bottom of Serie A after a dismal start to the season.

Mutual decision after poor run of form

The 49-year-old Frenchman, who took charge in November 2024, departs following a stretch of nine league matches without a win this campaign.

A brief club statement confirmed that Vieira “was no longer the coach of the first team,” while a source close to the former Arsenal captain revealed he initiated discussions with the club on Friday night, leading to a mutual agreement to part ways.

Vieira had initially steadied Genoa upon his arrival, guiding the team from 17th to a 13th-place finish last season with eight wins and nine draws in 26 games.

However, his second season proved disastrous, with six defeats in nine Serie A matches and only two victories, both in the Coppa Italia.

In a statement, Genoa thanked Vieira and his staff “for their dedication and professionalism” and wished them success in their future endeavors.

Turbulent managerial journey continues

Vieira’s departure from Genoa marks another setback in a managerial career defined by early promise and inconsistent results.

Since retiring as a player in 2011, the World Cup and Euro-winning midfielder has managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, and RC Strasbourg, experiencing both highs such as guiding Palace to an FA Cup semi-final, and lows, including mid-season dismissals.

A decorated player during his career, Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, alongside league titles with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester City.
